To All Who Knew Him

My father passed away peacefully at home in his sleep the night of August 19th, 2007. It had been an eventful day of swimming and barbecue at my parent's home for their adult kids and grandkids.
My father got to see everyone and say goodbye one last time to all the kids and grandkids. He gave me a big hearty handshake, smiled, looked me in the eye with those big friendly eyes of his, and said goodbye.
Little did any of us know that that would indeed be the final goodbye.

Dad was born in Macon, Missouri; and was always proud of Macon. His car even bore a personalized license plate that read "MACON MO".
He had lots of stories about Macon that we always enjoyed. He told of the town whistle that blew so everyone knew when it was time to go to work. I guess it was either a small town, or an awful big whistle.
Actually, we went to Macon many times in our youth to visit dad's mom.
Dad went to Macon High School and was on the football team.
He was also a lifeguard at the local pool. He was quite the jock in his day.
I don't know how many lives he saved at the pool, but I do know he once saved a man from trying to drown himself in the lake near the sanitorium. Yes, our dad was a hero, in more ways than one.
